Nicholas Roerich - the brightest representative of thinkers of the Silver Age of Russian culture
Jakopič promenade from February 15 to April 15, 2022
"PEACE THROUGH CULTURE. THE ROERICH PACT" is an educational exhibition of the International Centre of the Roerichs and the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich in Moscow. It will bring us closer to this extraordinary man, whom many people do not yet know. Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich (1874-1947) is the brightest representative among Russian and world thinkers of the Silver Age. He was a great Russian artist, philosopher, scientist, writer, poet, archaeologist and traveller. Roerich's creative legacy is enormous: he created more than 7,000 paintings (many of which are exhibited in famous galleries around the world), countless literary works, and he is the initiator of the Roerich Pact (Red Cross of Culture) - the idea of the need to protect the spiritual and material treasures of the world, or the protection of cultural property. Roerich's idea is that all venues of cultural value should be declared neutral and protected, similar to how hospitals are under the Red Cross. The Roerich Pact is also often called the Red Cross of Culture. Just as the Red Cross is a trademark and a sign, the Roerich Pact signifies a symbol, the Banner of Peace. The three dots in the flag represent art, science and religion, according to his belief, the three closest human cultural activities, while the circle represents the eternity of time and encompasses the past, present and future, as well as the totality of Culture. The Roerich Pact was first negotiated with the twenty-one nations of the Americas and signed as a treaty in the White House in the presence of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 15, 1935. It was signed by all members of the Pan American Union, and later by other countries as well. At the same time, Roerich also believed that peace in the world is a prerequisite for the survival of the planet and the further process of spiritual evolution. Therefore, he encouraged fellow human beings to help achieve this peace by uniting in the common language of Beauty and Knowledge, i.e., through Culture. "Where there is Culture, there is Peace. Where there is Peace, there is Culture." N.K. Roerich The exhibition was created in cooperation with Tourism Ljubljana and the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Ljubljana (Ruski dom). "It is a great mistake to think that during troubled times Culture can be disregarded. On the contrary, the need for Culture is especially felt in times of war and human misunderstandings. Without Art, Religion is inaccessible, Without Art the spirit of Nationality is lost. Without Art, Science is dark. This is not a utopia. The History of Humanity gives innumerable examples of Art being the great Beacon Light in times of calamity. Scientists assert that colour and sound are a panacea. By Beauty and Harmony even wild beasts were tamed. Let the sacred flute of Sri Krishna resound again! " Nicholas Roerich wrote in his work Adamant, published in 1947.
